The first castle of Edward I's Welsh campaign, begun in 1277, standing alone on the marshes of the Dee estuary — its unusual detached 'donjon' tower a design borrowed from France. Shakespeare set the fall of Richard II here. Today it's a free, open, atmospheric ruin of big skies and wading birds, best caught at high tide or golden hour, and it links to the Flint foreshore coast path. A quiet, evocative stop that most visitors race straight past.

Flint Castle is in Flint, North-East Wales. It's roughly 15 min (4.2 miles) from Holywell , and within reach of Ruthin (35 min) and Denbigh (37 min).
The nearest parking: Free car park by the lifeboat station/castle. Grid reference SJ 245 733 — works on any OS map and doesn't need a phone signal.
