About Explore Wales — who writes this and how we check it

Hi, I'm Craig — the walker, writer and photographer behind Explore Wales.

Most weekends you'll find my wife Chloe and me somewhere out in Wales with a flask and a map, following one guiding principle: let's just see what's the other side of that hill. It usually ends with us gloriously lost somewhere beautiful — which, honestly, is the point.

How I ended up here

I moved to North Wales after lockdown and have been exploring it ever since — though it really began years earlier, on childhood caravanning holidays here with my family and our Dalmatian, Pie. I fell for the variety of the place: the history, the culture, a wholly different landscape over every hill. Chloe's Welsh; we met working at a holiday-let company in Chester and married on the isle of Anglesey. These days we've a bigger car and a tent so we can reach more of the country.

Why this site exists

Explore Wales grew out of the same question Chloe and I kept asking each other: where shall we go? The answers online were always the same recycled lists — written from a desk, wrong about the parking, silent about the things that actually decide a day out. So I started writing the guide I wished I'd had. It began in 2026 as a weekend project in Prestatyn, first under the name Crwydro — Welsh for "to wander". Every full guide on this site is somewhere I've actually stood.

How we check things

Walked first-hand. Every guide carries a "walked & checked" date. If we haven't been recently, we say so.
The details that decide the day. Parking with OS grid references, honest timings, dog rules, toilets, phone signal. These change — if you spot something wrong, tell us and we'll fix it and re-date the page.
No thin content. A place gets a page when we can write something genuinely useful about it, not before.

Works offline, on purpose

Half the best places in North Wales have no signal. Once you've visited this site (or installed it to your home screen), every guide is saved on your device — the parking grid references, timings and route notes all work in a dead spot. The trip planner goes further with offline maps.

How the site is funded

Where you see accommodation or experience links, some are affiliate links: if you book through them we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. That's the whole business model — no display ads, no sponsored rankings, no selling your data. Affiliate links never change what we recommend, and they're always labelled.

Contribute & corrections

Know a place we've only got a quick reference for? That's exactly where you can help. If you can tell us the current parking situation, the real timings, whether the dogs-on-the-beach rule has changed, or send a photo you own the rights to, we'll fold it into a proper guide and credit you. Spotted an error on any page? Same address. Want your region covered next? Tell us.
