The big empty middle
Cadair Idris is the giant of the south — the classic ascent is the Minffordd Path past the dark glacial lake of Llyn Cau. Legend says a night on its summit sends you down either a poet or a madman; most people settle for the view.
Water and sky define the rest. The Elan Valley's chain of Victorian dams sits inside an International Dark Sky Park, with red kites wheeling overhead; Devil's Bridge stacks three bridges over the Mynach falls and is reached by the Vale of Rheidol steam railway from Aberystwyth, whose promenade and cliff railway make a cheerful coastal finish.
Distances between sights are long and the roads are slow, so this is country to settle into rather than tick off — pick a base and explore outward, and enjoy having the place largely to yourself.
