Perhaps the most spectacularly sited castle in Wales — a jagged ruin perched on a sheer limestone precipice above the Cennen valley, with a vaulted passage burrowing down into the cliff to a natural cave (bring a torch). It's reached through a working farm with a tearoom, and the final stretch is a steep field walk that earns the view. High on its lonely crag in the western Beacons, the setting is unforgettable. A small admission is charged.
Getting there
Carreg Cennen Castle is in near Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire, Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons). It's roughly 12 min (3.1 miles) from Llandeilo , and within reach of Llandovery (34 min) and Swansea & Mumbles (52 min).
The nearest parking: Farm car park below the castle (Castell Carreg Cennen farm). Grid reference SN 665 194 — works on any OS map and doesn't need a phone signal.
Good to know
Bring a torch for the cave passage. Approached through a working farm with a tearoom; the last stretch is a steep field walk.
