Victorian dams & dark-sky reservoirs

This is a quick reference, not a full walked guide. The facts below — location, parking, grid reference and access — are maintained from our dataset, but we haven't published our own first-hand write-up of Elan Valley yet. Know it well? Help us get it right.

A chain of grand Victorian dams and reservoirs threaded through wild Cambrian moorland — the 'Welsh Lake District', built to supply Birmingham with water and now an International Dark Sky Park with red kites overhead and miles of traffic-free cycling and walking trails. Start at the visitor centre; the Caban Coch and Pen y Garreg dams are the showpieces, thunderous when they overspill in spate. The stargazing here is some of the best in Wales. Parking is paid.
