A High Victorian fairytale in the woods above the Taff gorge, just north of Cardiff — three conical-roofed towers that look lifted from a storybook. It was created in the 1870s and 80s by the architect William Burges for the immensely rich 3rd Marquess of Bute, raised on the buried remains of a genuine 13th-century castle. Where the exterior is a romantic medieval fantasy, the interiors are extraordinary: the vaulted, star-spangled drawing room and Lady Bute's circular bedroom drip with painted birds, beasts and gilding. For all that effort, the family barely stayed here. It is a short drive or a woodland walk from Cardiff, Cadw-run, and startling to come upon through the trees.

Castell Coch is in Tongwynlais, Cardiff, South-East Wales. It's roughly 12 min (3.1 miles) from Caerphilly , and within reach of Cardiff (17 min) and Chepstow (72 min).
