Carneddau Ridge (Bwlch y Ddeufaen)

The largest area of high, wild ground in Wales — a sweep of grassy whaleback ridges grazed by semi-wild Carneddau ponies and dotted with Bronze Age standing stones along the ancient Bwlch y Ddeufaen pass. It holds several 3,000-foot summits, including Carnedd Llewelyn, and, being the northernmost of Eryri's giants, it's the closest to the coast. From the road-end car parks you're straight onto open mountain, with Foel Fras or Drum as fine objectives. It's big, empty and committing — genuine navigation skills are needed in cloud.

Getting there

Carneddau Ridge (Bwlch y Ddeufaen) is in Northern Eryri, Eryri (Snowdonia). It's roughly 11 min (2.8 miles) from Penmaenmawr , and within reach of Conwy (19 min) and Bethesda (19 min).

The nearest parking: Road-end car park at Bwlch y Ddeufaen (narrow lane from Rowen). Grid reference SH 718 728 — works on any OS map and doesn't need a phone signal.
