Porth Oer — the 'Whistling Sands' — is a National Trust crescent whose sand grains genuinely squeak underfoot in dry weather, with clean, surfable waves and coast-path walks over wild headlands on either side. Walk heel-first on a dry day for the best squeak. There's a seasonal beach café, and the tip of the Llŷn at Uwchmynydd is a short drive on. Parking is paid (free for NT members).
Getting there
Porthor (Whistling Sands) is in Llŷn, Llŷn Peninsula. It's roughly 9 min (1.8 miles) from Aberdaron , and within reach of Abersoch (27 min) and Nefyn (32 min).
The nearest parking: NT car park above the beach. Grid reference SH 175 292 — works on any OS map and doesn't need a phone signal.
Good to know
Best squeak on a dry day walking heel-first; seasonal beach café. Combine with Uwchmynydd at the tip.
