A mighty Norman fortress ringed by water on three sides, with a vast round keep you can still climb and an enormous natural cavern, the Wogan, hollowed out beneath it. This was the birthplace, in 1457, of Henry Tudor — the future Henry VII and founder of the Tudor dynasty. Walk the full circuit of the walls and climb the keep for the estuary view; the town quay below has good pubs. A great, under-visited castle.
