A stark, single square keep standing on a rocky ridge below Moel Siabod — a genuine castle of the Welsh princes, and by tradition the birthplace of Llywelyn the Great. It is perhaps the most romantically sited native castle in Wales. A short, steep farm-track walk leads up to it, and it's at its most magical on an early start with mist filling the valley. Cadw charges a small admission.
Getting there
Dolwyddelan Castle is in Conwy Valley, Eryri (Snowdonia). It's roughly 12 min (3 miles) from Capel Curig , and within reach of Betws-y-Coed (18 min) and Beddgelert (26 min).
The nearest parking: Small Cadw lay-by on the A470 west of Dolwyddelan. Grid reference SH 724 521 — works on any OS map and doesn't need a phone signal.
