Where to eat on Anglesey

We went the evening after we got married on Anglesey, which is the sort of thing that can make you unreliable about a restaurant. Several return visits later, we’re still recommending it, so it wasn’t the occasion talking.

It’s small — fewer than ten tables in a converted house on Pendref Street — and it’s the kind of small that works in its favour. We ate our way through most of the menu: patatas bravas, meatballs, seafood, croquetas, then dessert and a sherry to finish. The bill was extremely reasonable for what arrived, though it was long enough ago that we won’t pretend to remember the number.

What we do remember is Di, the owner, who could not do enough for us, and who is visibly, thoroughly proud of the place — it comes through in how the food is put in front of you. When the table next to us worked out what we were celebrating, they bought us a bottle of sparkling wine. That’s the kind of room it is.

Book. We emailed ahead to make sure there was space, and we’d do it again — they’re a small operation having to turn people away most nights, and turning up hopefully on a Saturday is optimistic. It’s tapas in the evenings, Thursday to Saturday, with last food orders at 9pm. They close over the winter and reopen in spring, so check before you make a special trip out of season.

It’s a few minutes from Newborough Beach and Ynys Llanddwyn, which makes the obvious plan an obvious one: the island in the afternoon, back into the village, and tapas while your legs recover.

We ate here in the week after our wedding — we’d stayed on Anglesey rather than going anywhere else, which turned out to be the right call — and it was the best meal of the trip. The food was outstanding and the wine even more so.

It’s a small place on Wood Street, tucked between the high street and the library, and the menu is deliberately short and changes with the season rather than trying to please everyone. The wine list is the part we’d single out: it goes well beyond what a restaurant this size normally bothers with, and it’s worth letting them steer you rather than defaulting to something you already know.

Sage was opened in 2020 by three friends and has since picked up national recognition, which locally surprises nobody. Book ahead — it’s a small room and it fills with people who already know.

Menai Bridge is the first place you reach crossing onto the island, so it works either as the start of an Anglesey trip or as the meal at the end of one. Beaumaris and its castle are ten minutes up the coast.
